Eighteen years ago, Henry Asquith, Duke of Avesbury had to leave his kept lover, Kit Redford, in order to devote himself to raising his young family. Now, a lifetime later, his children are moving on and, for the first time in years, Henry is alone.

During a rare visit to London, Henry unexpectedly happens upon an old friend of Kit’s and learns that Kit did not receive the financial pay off he was entitled to when Henry left him. Instead, Kit was thrown out of his home and left destitute. Horrified, Henry begs Kit to see him and allow Henry to compensate him. But Kit, who now owns a discreet club for gentlemen of a certain persuasion, neither needs nor wants Henry’s money.

“Perhaps you should earn the money you owe me the way I had to earn it? On your knees, and on your back, taking my cock like a whore.”

Kit thought he had put his old hurts and grievances about Henry behind him, but when he sees Henry again, he discovers that, not only is the old pain still there, so is the fierce attraction that once burned between them. When, in a moment of fury, Kit demands a scandalous form of penance from Henry, no one is more surprised than Kit when Henry agrees to pay it. As Kit and Henry spend more time together, they learn more about the men they have become, and about the secret feelings and desires they concealed from one another in the past. Henry realises he wants to build a future with Kit, but can he persuade his wary lover to trust him ever again? And can two men from such different worlds make a new life together?

This is the most wonderful historical romance i have ever listened to. Kit and Henry have a relationship that is abruptly ended when Henry's wife becomes ill. 18 years later, Henry returns to London to find out that all did not occur in the past as he'd thought! I love this series and look forward to the next one!

I've read some (perhaps all?) of the other books in this series, and on the whole I've enjoyed them. I thought this one worked particularly well, and it didn't rely on any knowledge from prior books. There was a bit more sex than I care for, but that may be catnip for other readers. I liked the MCs and enjoyed learning their story.

Really liked this book. Henry is so repressed at first, then so brave. Kit is brash on the outside but sweet underneath. Together they are just *chef’s kiss*! Great story and perfect narration overall, the parrot voice cracked me up.

This audible was like a sensual caress. Simon narrated with such a subtle yet meaningful voice. The entire experience felt so intimate. I loved that we got to be part of how close they were in the past as well as go with them through this journey of rediscover. Henry is a good and genuine soul who wants to make right by his past lover. Kit took care of himself and his own. I respected they were an equally strong pair. I actually did this series by audible, and I think the narration and accent really notched the atmosphere and time period up.

So Sensual!

This story is great to read, but honestly even better to listen to. Two big hearts that lost each other along the way, Henry has realized that with his children grown he is lonely, while Kit believes he has hardened his heart since his ‘soft and gullible’ days. When a chance meeting alerts Henry that their parting was even more fraught than he’d realized, he sets out to right the wrongs. It’s interesting to hear Kit try to exact his pound of flesh, even more so Henry’s reaction.

Simon Goldhill is perfect for this narration, his smooth, flexible voice easily giving characters their unique characterizations and making friends of them. When an audio book actually elevates the story with the vocal nuances of the performer, it’s a great experience – and this is one of those books.

Even better as audio
