Doug Jones has been an educator, family man, woodworker, musician, bicyclist, and storyteller for long enough to have observed some interesting things. While on faculty at Appalachian State University in the High Country of North Carolina, Dr. Jones (“Dr.J”) and his family were introduced to Appalachian Jack Tales and got hooked. Reflecting on varied experiences over his life, he began to sketch out ideas for his own original Jack Tales, resulting in the publication of his first book/audiobook, “Jack and the Bear Scarin’ Socks and Other Tales.” One of the tales in this book was included in the Proceedings of the 50th Annual Conference of the Appalachian Studies Association. A passion is connecting with others through storytelling so that they might appreciate and experience the wit, wisdom, and richness of life experiences, especially those from the culture of Southern Appalachia. After a career as a classroom teacher, a University Professor, and consultant, DrJ now writes children’s stories, folk tales, and essays on family, history, education, and spiritual matters. He lives with his wife Pam and their dog Poseidon in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Gainesville, GA.
