Dovie King, JD Lawyer. Author. Survivor. Truth-Teller. Not necessarily in that order. I’m Dovie King, and after years of navigating the legal system—both professionally and personally—I decided to write the book I needed but couldn’t find. Survivor of Law is part memoir, part manual, part social critique, and part quiet rebellion. It’s written for anyone who’s ever had to fight for their safety, their sanity, or their child—and still show up the next day like everything’s fine. I’m a graduate of Brown University and Northeastern University School of Law, and I’ve practiced law in California, New York, and Massachusetts. My work has focused on public interest advocacy—representing immigrants, low-wage workers, and survivors of violence. I’ve also spent years mentoring law students at Harvard Law School, breaking down complex legal systems and reminding people that justice isn’t theoretical—it’s personal. This book didn’t come from the courtroom. It came after. After the trauma, after the custody battles, after the EMDR and PTSD therapy, and after finally building a home that didn’t feel like a minefield. Only then could I look back and write—not from the wreckage, but from the other side. My writing blends the personal with the practical. It’s honest, sharp, and unapologetically funny—because sometimes you either laugh or lose your mind. I write for survivors who are tired of whispering, for parents caught in broken systems, and for anyone who needs to hear: you’re not crazy, and you’re not alone. When I’m not writing or lawyering, I’m raising my son, traveling, avoiding my inbox, and wondering if the laundry will ever fold itself. (Spoiler: it won’t.) Survivor of Law is my first book.
