J.R. Wise is a combat veteran who did time in both the active duty Marine Corps and the Virginia Army National Guard. He deployed overseas seven times, including one all-expenses-paid trip to sunny Afghanistan, and picked up a decent collection of medals and stories along the way. These days, he channels the chaos of military life into writing gritty, character-driven sci-fi as a way to make sense of the trauma and keep the demons busy. A big believer in mental health awareness, especially for veterans and first responders, Wise uses his stories to spotlight the stuff most folks would rather not talk about. When he’s not writing, he works as an athletic trainer for a local fire department, trying to keep those heroes patched up and ready for whatever the city throws at them. He lives with his amazing wife, Karen, and their beagle, Sandy, who’s in charge of morale.
