Throughout her life, Janel has explored a variety of paths. Growing up on a small farm in rural New Hampshire, she developed a profound connection to the land. Over the years, she has worked as a model, wrangler, construction worker, sales associate, catering manager, chef, and business owner. Ultimately, she discovered her true calling in healing the land through regenerative practices. She serves as the Director of Agriculture at Plantd, Inc., a startup dedicated to carbon capture through the utilization of perennial grasses, which are then incorporated into alternative wood products, resulting in carbon-negative building materials. She earned her PhD in Soil Science from North Carolina State University, where she was recognized as a USDA National Needs Fellow in the Department of Crop and Soil Science. Her research focused on employing machine learning and remote sensing technologies to enhance the understanding of soil fertility dynamics and the factors that limit agricultural yield. Additionally, she holds a Master's degree in Agricultural Science and a Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems from the University of New Hampshire. She is passionate about advancing sustainable and equitable practices within agriculture and food systems. Janel is a chef with classical training and has spent 20 years in the hospitality industry before pursuing further education. She is passionate about creating change and actively participates in discussions that focus on improving our food and agricultural systems. Janel also presents at conferences for new and emerging farmers, emphasizing that quality food begins with strong foundational practices. In her book, Janel invites readers to embark on a journey through her life, navigating its numerous challenges and triumphs. Throughout her story, she reveals how she harnessed her innate abilities to uncover her true passions and achieve success. With each page, she aims to inspire readers to explore their own skillsets and utilize the tools they already have to unlock their full potential.
