Joann Schaefer, MD, is a board-certified family physician who practiced in Omaha, Nebraska, and was a tenured associate professor at Creighton University School of Medicine. She practiced full-spectrum family medicine, from cradle to grave, enjoying all that medicine has to offer both in life and death. From the academic side, she then spent over eleven years at the State of Nebraska working in public health where she led initiatives during multiple public health events as the state’s longest serving and first female Chief Medical Officer in Governor Dave Heineman’s cabinet. As a regulator, she accomplished measurable positive impacts on the delivery of healthcare statewide. From childcare to hospitals, quality and safety standards were enforced and upheld, not to mention all of those licensed in the state in any healthcare-related field. Under her leadership, the state addressed pandemics, natural disasters, domestic terrorism, and bringing licensing and other systems up from paper to electronic formats. Dr. Schaefer led the charge in obtaining smokefree status across the state and other public policy changes regarding infant mortality, safety-net programs, licensing regulations, and fruit and vegetable consumption—all with lasting positive impacts. She worked with the Nebraska Governor and key cabinet members to make Nebraska the first preventive care–based model for employee health insurance in the US, winning national praise and awards. After her time with the state, she moved to the corporate sector where she joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska and became the CMO and an executive vice president leading the charge to revamp the clinical and reimbursement models to value-based care. She brought in and built predictive modeling tools and increased care management nurse expertise. She helped build and oversee a first of its kind whole-person health clinic, seeing 46,000 patients annually. This whole-person clinic rocketed to become the number-one highest quality, lowest cost clinic in the state and one of the top in the country providing positive outcomes at high value. During the COVID pandemic, she volunteered her expertise helping the public health system and businesses wherever she could before taking a job as president of a small company until it was successfully transitioned where she then led as board chair. She enjoys serving her community by doing board service such as the Salvation Army that focuses on basic needs for the most vulnerable and the Lane Thomas Foundation Board that focuses on financial assistance for pediatric transplant recipients. Now, as a healthcare consultant in her own business, Dr. Schaefer became a certified integral coach for executives and physicians. She currently serves as the medical director of LifeBridge Nebraska, an exclusive coaching program for physicians in Nebraska.
