From an early age, I believed in treating people the way I wanted to be treated—kindly, fairly, and with genuine respect. That simple belief carried me through some of the most difficult years of my career, especially when I found myself working under managers whose self-centered behavior made every day miserable. At the time, I didn’t realize I was dealing with narcissists; I just knew something was wrong, and I blamed myself for far too long. Eventually, the frustration and emotional toll pushed me to start my own consulting business. It wasn’t easy, but it allowed me to provide for my family while staying true to my values. Over time, I began to notice a troubling pattern: many of the companies in crisis were run by leaders who lacked empathy and were driven almost entirely by their need for validation. The more I worked with these clients, the more clearly I saw how damaging narcissistic leadership can be. I also discovered how deeply I wanted to help the employees trying to survive under these managers. That discovery led me to study the dynamics of narcissism in the workplace—and more importantly, how people can recognize it, protect themselves, and find ways to thrive despite it. This book is the result of that journey, and it’s my hope that it helps others find the understanding and tools I wish I had much earlier in my career. My two previous books about business are also in the same vein - trying to help people understand their business and avoid bankruptcy.
