Omar Sakr was born in Western Sydney to Lebanese and Turkish Muslim migrants. He was raised by single Arab Muslim women and it is to them he dedicates his success. His debut collection of poetry, 'These Wild Houses' (Cordite, 2017), was shortlisted for the Kenneth Slessor Prize, the Judith Wright Calanthe Award, and Commended for the Anne Elder Award. His poetry has been translated into Arabic and Spanish, and appeared most recently in the Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day series, Djed Press, Peril Magazine, and Prairie Schooner. The 2019 recipient of the Edward Stanley Award for Poetry, Omar is also a widely published essayist with work featured in The Saturday Paper, Meanjin, and Kill Your Darlings, among many others. His latest book is The Lost Arabs (UQP, 2019) which was recently shortlisted in the Queensland Literary Awards.
