Born to Dutch parents, Kuitenbrouwer grew up in west Quebec. Each spring his family gathered sap for maple syrup. Peter’s career as a journalist took him to Ottawa, Mexico City, Montreal and New York. In 1997 he joined the National Post. He became known for witty, insightful columns in the newspaper’s Toronto section, and as an award-winning business writer. He has published two books for children. In 2012 Peter won a William Southam Journalism Fellowship to Massey College, University of Toronto. His stories have appeared in Toronto Life, Maclean’s, GEO, Chatelaine, Saturday Night, Canadian Geographic, The Walrus and newspapers across North America. After 20 years at the National Post, in 2019 Peter graduated with a Master of Forest Conservation from the University of Toronto. Peter is now a registered professional forester. Peter writes forest plans and manages forests, including the family’s own forest in Madoc, Ontario. He is editor of Our Forest, the magazine of the non-profit tree planting organization Forests Canada. Kuitenbrouwer’s stories, now mainly focused on forest topics, appear in The Globe and Mail and elsewhere. He teaches forestry at the University of Toronto and journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University. He lives in downtown Toronto. Each spring, Kuitenbrouwer and his family make maple syrup in their forest.
