Robert Gonzales’ work of Living Compassion has emerged from more than 30 years of teaching Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and a lifetime of inquiry into the intersection between spirituality and human communication. His influences included Dr. Marshall Rosenberg (founder of Nonviolent Communication), Stephen R. Schwartz (creator of Compassionate Self-Care), and other spiritual teachers. Robert received a PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1989 and he was a practicing therapist for many years. He met Marshall Rosenberg in 1985 and began teaching NVC in 1986. Robert contributed to the work of the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) as a Certified Trainer, a Certification Assessor, and as Board President. He was also one of the Co-founders of the NVC Training Institute. Robert founded the Center for Living Compassion in 2000 as a result of what he referred to as ”a calling” to focus on, grow, and share his work of Living Compassion. In December 2020, Robert articulated his ”Vision and Dream” for expanding Living Compassion and he invited others to join him in bringing this to life. Robert intended that this Vision and Dream would be a guide for bringing the Living Compassion community into a global network of connection and mutual support to live and expand compassion throughout the world (see the Afterword for more about Robert’s Vision and Dream). Robert's teachings and practices have, and continue to help thousands of people worldwide to find healing and grow in freedom from suffering, previously unavailable to them. Robert Gonzales left his body the midnight hour of November 19/20, 2021.
