During my communications career with the Nova Scotia Government I worked at the Justice Department that gave me insight into Karissa Boudreau's murder and how the system works. I've won several National Public Relations awards. In 2014, I won a Progress Club Women of Excellence award for my contribution to public affairs. I am a graduate of the University of King's College. While at King's University, my professor/author Stephen Kimber, introduced me to freelancing for Maclean's Magazine. Fresh out of school, I became a staff writer in 1985. For eight years, I reported in Alberta for the Edmonton Journal newspaper. I covered the Alberta politics and did a stint in Ottawa reporting from Parliament Hill. In 1995, I returned to Halifax with my family to work in Nova Scotia. I joined The Daily News in Halifax - where I was a summer intern years before. I wrote news columns and became the Managing Editor for two years before leaving in 2005.
