A Yale graduate who volunteered to serve his country, Larry Gwin was only 23 years old when he arrived in Vietnam in 1965. After a brief stint in the Delta, Gwin was reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in An Khe. There, in the hotly contested Central Highlands, he served almost nine months as executive officer for Alpha Company, 2/7, fighting against crack NVA troops in some of the war's most horrific battles.

The bloodiest conflict of all began November 12, 1965, after 2nd Battalion was flown into the Ia Drang Valley west of Pleiku. Acting as point, Alpha Company spearheaded the battalion's march to landing zone Albany for pickup, not knowing they were walking into the killing zone of an NVA ambush that would cost them 10 percent casualties.

Gwin spares no one, including himself, in his gut-wrenching account of the agony of war. Through the stench of death and the acrid smell of napalm, he chronicles the Vietnam War in all its nightmarish horror.

Rations as in nations, "0h" instead of zero with 24 time, and a few other odd way of saying things (T O C, instead of "toc" as in tick-toc) made this an annoying listen, but the story overcame those minor irks to make a great listen.

Narration not great, but fantastic story

I saw Larry Gwyn on a documentary about the Cavs first battle of Ia Drang and found him utterly captivating. This book is simply one of the best first-hand accounts of the war in Vietnam told from American perspective. It's thoughtful, reflective, and poignant. My only issue with this is the voice over artist. He's got a great voice and is captivating in the telling, but there are some extremely odd pronunciations and some interesting vocal choices. But the story is so good I can get past that.

Great narrative! Honest and self reflective. Some strange pronunciations from the narrator, though.

Great story of Lieutenant Gwin’s journey in Vietnam. A must read personal account that brings you along for the ride of your life in a foreign land.
