On June 13, 1966, men of the 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division, were stationed on Hill 488. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the US military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, 13 Silver Stars, and 18 Purple Hearts - some of them posthumously.

During the early evening of June 15, a battalion of hardened North Vietnamese regulars and Viet Cong - outnumbering the Americans 25 to one - threw everything they had at the 16 marines and two navy corpsmen for the rest of that terror-filled night. Every man who held the hill was either killed or wounded defending the ground with unbelievable courage and unflagging determination - even as reinforcements were on the way. All they had to do was make it until dawn....

Very amazing tale of battle. Original events must be hell on earth. Good pace, good lingo.

Great account of events, good narrator, gripping.

This is another tale from the Vietnam war. A tragic tale about young men in a distant land and the terrors of war, including the horrible wounds they observed in their friends and there was nothing they could do. To have to fight all night, until you are out of ammunition, with enemy still just beyond the perimeter.

American kids, Marine galantry

I loved the style used in writing this book. I have read a great deal about the Vietnam War and never heard about this battle. It is a great story
about a harrowing struggle fought by brave people who were truly " A Band of Brothers ".. It must have been very difficult for the author to have to dig so deep into his experience of such a terrifying night.

Great Book about the Vietnam War

Great read, shows the love for country and for each man to the left and right. Solid read would recommend.

By listing to this book it clarify some history that I heard. I heard that the Marines would throw rocks followed by grenades when the ammunition was running low that was incorrect.

Thank you very much for writing this book.
