Lady Georgiana “Georgie” Rannoch is just like any other new mother, balancing responsibilities of being 34th in line for the British throne and solving the shocking deaths of several young men, in this new Royal Spyness novel from the queen of historical mystery, Rhys Bowen.

Georgie may be figuring out what it means to be a new mother but she does know one thing for sure: she absolutely despises the strict nanny who was foisted upon her by her meddlesome sister-in-law. In search of a new nanny, Georgie travels to London to see her old friend ZouZou only to find her about to depart for a funeral, after the unexpected death of a young man in her social circle. It quickly becomes clear there’s more than one mysterious death around town, when another friend reveals he’s also just returned from the funeral of a school friend, who seemingly died in a boating accident. But when word arrives that the son of family friend has also died tragically and unexpectedly, Georgie is certain it can’t be a coincidence. Yet the victims don’t seem to have any connection to one another.

ZouZou shares Georgie’s suspicions that the deaths were not an accident and begs Georgie to solve the case. As Georgie delves deeper, she can’t help worrying that her own husband, Darcy, may be next. It seems likely there is a serial killer at work and Darcy fits the bill to be their next victim. Will Georgie solve the murders before it’s too late for Darcy, and manage to find the perfect nanny all at the same time?

After listening to all the Royal Spyness books over the years, you get to know and love the characters. They were read completely differently in this book with a new reader and it felt like you were listening to people you didn’t know. You kind of get used to it after a while but Georgiana was always so warm and sweet to listen to and this version makes her sound more posh and a little stuck up. And no one else sounded like themselves either (other than maybe Fig). I made it through this book but not sure I’ll keep listening to future ones if the original way they were read doesn’t come back or isn’t improved at least.

Felt like different characters

There seemed to be no distinction between two women’s voices snarling at each other in the early quarter of the book. It was dismal to listen to and lasted much to long. It was the weakest part of the book. I think it was one narrator trying to sound different from the other speaker. It didn’t work because it harmed the listening experience.

The unfortunate narrators

The narrator did a marvelous job bringing all the characters to life. So excited that married life and motherhood hasn't stopped Georgie from solving mysteries.

wonderful seeing Georgie back out solving

I was excited about the newest chapter in this series. I love the funny characters, the endearing ones, the goofy ones and even the characters that are peevish.
I know that performers had to come and go sometimes, but I was disappointed when ZouZou & Belinda didn’t sound like themselves - I have to admit, the voices made those characters more engaging for me.
Funny, cozy, period mystery. That is my favorite genre!!!

Love Georgie & company so much!

As always a wonderful romp with Fig being horrid, Belinda just a little ditzi and Darcy being most sensible. Although I enjoyed the story, please, please either get the narrator to listen to previous books and use the correct voices for the characters or get another narrator! This was very hard to listen to.

Fun but please get another narrator!
