She was two semesters from finishing when they got married.

She deferred so he could do his MBA. She deferred again when the baby came. Then she stopped mentioning it. The credits sat on a transcript in a filing cabinet for twenty years. His diploma hung on the office wall.

She re-enrolled on a Tuesday afternoon while the house was empty. Two semesters to complete.

She told him three days later. He said: "That's great, babe." He was already reaching for something else.

Now she has classes two nights a week. She needs the dining room table. She has a capstone project due in April. And the life he has relied on for twenty years — the one where she was always available, always flexible, always managing the household around his schedule — stops being available.
