His work trips don't require a permission slip.

He mentions Denver over dinner — three days, next month — the way you'd mention the weather. He doesn't check the calendar. He doesn't ask if it works. He just goes.

She has never gone anywhere.

She books a rental on the coast. Five nights. $475. By herself.

She tells him at dinner. Her husband puts down his fork. "What about the kids?" She says: "What about them? You're their father."

Now he has a week. The volleyball tournament. The orthodontist on Tuesday. Lunches — the blue container, not the green, turkey on the left side, no crusts. The EpiPen in the cabinet above the microwave he didn't know was there.

She left a note in the kitchen drawer. Three pages. Every number. Every system she built for a family that never asked how it ran.

He reads it twice.
