It is the eve of Sheriff Cammie Farnsworth and Jace Northcott's wedding. With Dr. Samuel Westerfield in charge of the event, it promises to be the wedding of the century in the small, remote town of Twin Ponds, Maine.

Ten days before the wedding, while investigating a claim by ninety-two-year-old Cora Cameron that she is being stalked by a scarecrow, Cammie stumbles upon a homeless man who has been assaulted in the woods. Trying to piece together if the two are related, she is suddenly thrown into despair when Jace suddenly vanishes. To her horror, she discovers that a serial killer she helped bring to justice years ago has been released from prison. Known as the Jack-O-Lantern killer because of the crude carving of a pumpkin he'd cut into his victims, he swore revenge against her when he was arrested. Fifteen years later, is he keeping that promise?

While Cammie, her team, and the people of Twin Ponds search desperately for Jace, Doc's hated relative Lily Evans unexpectedly shows up. Two days later, she also disappears. Is it coincidental? Or has she too fallen victim to the Jack-O-Lantern killer?

Racing against the clock, Cammie faces her most difficult and emotionally wrenching case yet. What has happened to Jace? Is the Jack-O-Lantern killer responsible? Has he made good on his promise to seek vengeance against her by kidnapping Jace?
