Aavarana: The Veil by S. L. Bhyrappa is a story of a free-spirited and rebellious young woman, Lakshmi, who marries the man she is deeply in love with. Amir, her husband, requests she convert to Islam, and she reluctantly agrees. Despite her father being completely against the marriage, she breaks ties with him and changes her name to Razia. However, things change for the worse, and she discovers a different side to Amir. He is not the progressive and liberal person she thought he was. He, along with his family, forces her into practicing Islam. This sets Lakshmi on a journey to uncover India's history of religion, caste, and creed. And she finds out that although Indian society has come a long way over the centuries, it still remains as rigid as before.

The narrator is exceptionally good - she changes registers between male and female voices so credibly. The story has highly discomfiting moments of brutality and pathos.

Excellent Narration

The most intriguing book about the systematic damage caused by Islamic Invaders and how Indians are brainwashed to make these invaders the heros and how True Indian heros are forgotten

Unveils the mechanism undertaken by elite historians in India through several decades to mislead students and citizens through a severely tilted ideology.
I was initially skeptical to try the audio version of the translation. Wish I could read the original Kannada version. However the translation is great and I didn’t feel anything lost in translation. Makes the book feel like an english language original. The audio component though could have been better. The reader isn’t great pronouncing Indian origin words and names and is mostly monotonous.

Phenomenal book. Shows research.
