All About Me! charts Mel Brooks’s meteoric rise from a Depression-era kid in Brooklyn to the recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Whether serving in the United States Army in World War II, or during his burgeoning career as a teenage comedian in the Catskills, Mel was always mining his experiences for material, always looking for the perfect joke. His iconic career began with Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows, where he was part of the greatest writers’ room in history, which included Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart. After co-creating both the mega-hit 2000 Year Old Man comedy albums and the classic television series Get Smart, Brooks’s stellar film career took off. He would go on to write, direct, and star in The Producers, The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, and Spaceballs, as well as produce groundbreaking and eclectic films, including The Elephant Man, The Fly, and My Favorite Year. Brooks then went on to conquer Broadway with his record-breaking, Tony-winning musical, The Producers.

How was the narrator?

Listening to Mel Brooks tell his own story was a treat upon a treat, like extra whip cream on your hot fudge sundae. Thanks Mr. Brooks.

Perfect title

Mel Brooks has never pretended to be humble, and this book is no exception. But he’s earned the right to be a bit arrogant. Across more than a dozen films, two Broadway shows, countless television credits, and more, Mel has led an incredible life that’s entertained across generations and deserves to share it with us. As he is finally approaching being a legitimate 2,000 Year Old Man, listening to his stories right from the horse’s mouth has been a pleasure. I’m looking forward to a rewatch of his life’s work, and I do so now with an intimate understanding of what makes Mel tick. Very grateful for that.

Very Good and Reasonably Entertaining

Overall, I thought it was very good but I wish I didn't listen. I love Mel Brooks and his movies but the book just didn't do it for me.

It should have been called All About My Work because it was mostly about that and less about him. The autobiography in the beginning is great (growing up in New York, going to War, working as a young man) but then it devolves into rote recitation of his oeuvre with very few details other than some accolades.

to hear the guy who lived it was worth it. I have always enjoyed Mel Brooks' story telling and this did not disappoint. Only negative, it would have been great story telling if he shared more about life with Ann Bancroft and less of each movie making experience.

I love Mel Brooks, and his story not disappoint. If you are a fan of Mel Brooks, I definitely recommend this book!
