When Jacques Lusseyran was an eight-year-old Parisian schoolboy, he was blinded in an accident. He finished his schooling determined to participate in the world around him. In 1941, when he was seventeen, that world was Nazi-occupied France. Lusseyran formed a resistance group with fifty-two boys and used his heightened senses to recruit the best. Eventually, Lusseyran was arrested and sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp in a transport of two thousand resistance fighters. He was one of only thirty from the transport to survive. His gripping story is one of the most powerful and insightful descriptions of living and thriving with blindness, or indeed any challenge, ever published.

Absolutely amazing

What an amazing man. I don't know what else to say. Words cannot express how much i recommend this title. The first horror story of ww2 suffering made beautiful.
Poetically told, dramatic, haunting, hopeful..
I would have loved to have met this writer.. Im sure i will in heaven.

So much to think about in a fairly short book

This is one where I will likely purchase a hard copy so I can underline certain passages and digest them further.

To be kept close, and reread always. A reminder, affirmation, and insistence of the one truest thing.

I’ll give this book to each of my children. I will read it aloud one winter, in our cozy house. I will hope they take it all to heart, forever in themselves—the connectedness of life, the love that pushes away all fears, and the light they have—and the lights they are.

Lusseyran’s ability to lucidly share aspects of his inner landscape and while blind, living and acting through some of the darkest times in history; truly touching and raises the most interesting and serious questions. The book is a treasure.
