The startling and ultimately uplifting narrative of one woman's 13-year experience as a foster parent.

For more than a decade, Kathy Harrison has sheltered a shifting cast of troubled youngsters - the offspring of prostitutes and addicts; the sons and daughters of abusers; and teenage parents who aren't equipped for parenthood. All this, in addition to raising her three biological sons and two adopted daughters. What would motivate someone to give herself over to constant, largely uncompensated chaos? For Harrison, the answer is easy.

Another Place at the Table is the story of life at our social services' front lines, centered on three children who, when they come together in Harrison's home, nearly destroy it. It is the frank first-person story of a woman whose compassionate best intentions for a child are sometimes all that stand between violence and redemption.

I too have a heart for children and have tried to help in a much more limited way than the author. This book encourages and inspires me. Thank you for changing the world, one life at a time.

A glimpse into an important calling

A place at the table is painfully truthful.
She does a great job of saying things that we foster parents are either too embarrassed to say out loud. She also was able to put into words things what foster parents feel but don’t have the time or energy to actually find words for! GREAT BOOK!

After finishing I stayed up WAAAAY too late in the quiet, wee hours trying to figure out how I can help the system, fellow foster parents and my own foster child more.

Truth.

Thank you for your honesty in sharing your experience and those of many other foster parents.

Realities of Fostering

As an aspiring foster parent I appreciated the honesty in this book of the hardships and of the authors feelings. It managed to convey the seriousness, heartache, joy, and fulfillment all at once instead of highlighting only one aspect.

Authentic and honest
