Julie Newcomb has been called back to the birthplace of her worst memories, to be a companion to the one person she fears most. The truth lies somewhere on her grandmother's crumbling plantation, as real and terrifying as the two skeletons lying together in the swampy shadows of Deadman's Hollow.©1985 Barbara Michaels (P)1992 Recorded Books,LLC Thriller & Suspense Suspense Psychological Exciting Genre Fiction Romantic Suspense

I am only 12:15 mins into the story... I ABSOLUTELY HATE the narrator...she breaths after EVERY sentence. I bought the book it so I will listen I hate to waste a credit...

Killer of a story...

Turns out this was a romance book, not a mystery as such. I felt that author put more effort into making romance work out than solve the mystery. pleasant having both.

Story was ok but...

One of the best Barbara Michaels books. A great comfort story for summer. Wonderful Southern gothic story.

Great story

An enjoyable old-family-ties-that-bind-just-might-end-up-killing-you storyline that was fun to both read and listen to, but then as a kid, I also had a scary old grandmother afflicted by a stroke who lived in a cool scary old house so it was a bit nostalgic. The characters were brought to life by the talents of both author and narrator though at times the narrator seemed to be recalling a story very slowly.

I can't really peg this story as there was a touch of mystery, a touch of romance, a touch of humor, but I guess it mostly dealt with overcoming the past. The ending was a bit jumbled, but still overall a good listen. (The Audible photo suggests the story might be a bit gruesome, but it wasn't at all.)

One of the few five-star books

My rating would have been lower had Barbara Rosenblat not been the reader. She is the best - Unfortunately, Barbara Michaels is not Nevada Barr or Elizabeth Peters.
