This series of short stories is designed to be a peek into the daily lives of those suffering with their mental health problems. From the outside, people can often look like nothing is wrong and yet they may be suffering. I wanted to draw attention to this. Someone walking down the street with a smile on their face may be suffering behind closed doors. Using some of my own experiences, emotions and research, I have compiled ten short stories predominantly focusing on anxiety and depression. However, there is also mention of Emetophobia, self-harm, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Behind Closed Doors is a wonderful collection of short stories that does a great job of summarizing a few of the more common (and a few not so common) mental illnesses.

I really enjoyed how Holland described each character and their illness. As someone who has suffered from many of the chosen disorders, I was impressed with the way they managed to accurately portray each illness without making the story too triggering or upsetting. Even so they still conveyed the difficulties that each situation presented.

This is a great body of work that anyone can enjoy and many of us can relate to or learn from. I particularly enjoyed that they showed both the lows and the highs of being a person suffering with a mental illness. Holland is a talented author and I think they did this topic the justice it deserves.

A wonderful collection portraying mental illness
