A missing war mage. Death in the heartland.

Settling into her new life in the human world, the last thing Arrow expects is a request for aid from the Erith. The Erith's favorite war mage is missing and Arrow is asked to investigate.

For the first time in her life, she is allowed into the Erith's fabled heartland. It does not take long for Arrow to realize that the heartland is like the Erith themselves. Full of wonder, breathtakingly beautiful, and deadly.

Arrow is drawn into investigating a death at the very heart of the Erith's homeland with the growing sense that there is far more wrong and far more at stake than a simple murder and missing mage.

I like Arrow’s growth arc. Kester, Kallish and all the rest are fabulous characters as well. I still struggle with the way the Erith in general turned a blind eye to Arrow’s treatment, although her experience was with a fairly small subset up until this book.

Great story with fabulous characters

Plenty of action to keep the plot moving and an intriguing mystery with political scheming all balanced with character development and subtle humor

I am enjoying this series more than I anticipated, and appreciate the pace and progression of the action.

careful world building and dynamic characters

I continue to enjoy the story. I could have done without the homosexual relationships - the love between a teacher and his student particularly bothered me as I myself am a teacher and have very strong beliefs against romantic relationships between teachers and their students. At least the homosexual relationships were only mentioned and not graphic. I do look forward to the next book.

Again and again Arrow is drawn into requests for help from the Erith who once held her bound. Now free, Arrow refuses the summons to help. Yet she ends up helping look for a murder or murderers finding political intrigue and bone-deep betrayal among the elite. Much is revealed and Arrow continues to grow strong in confidence and skill and power. Another fine, exciting fantasy read.

Excellent narration by Kristin Atherton.

Political intrigue and the guilty lose.
