Doppo Kunikida is an idealist and a straitlaced detective at the Armed Detective Agency, an organization that takes on dangerous jobs even the police won’t handle. Everything in his life is going just as he’s planned…until one day, he’s paired up with the agency’s newest hire: a suspicious, eccentric, suicide-obsessed man named Osamu Dazai. Their first case together turns out to be far more complicated than Kunikida anticipated—and it looks like the detective agency’s sworn enemy, the Port Mafia, is somehow involved, too!Set two years before the events of the manga series, this is the tale of how two seemingly incompatible personalities end up forming the partnership that has made them one of Yokohama’s top detective duos! I just finished listening to this audiobook for the second time, and I can’t get over how lucky we’ve been with this series. The voiceover is by one of the anime’s English voice actors, and he does a superb job. He nails each character in the story with shocking accuracy. So far, the first four light novels have been voiced over in English, hopefully with more to come.

As a Dazai fan, this is one of my favorite volumes of the light novel. There is a lot of dark humor and emotional layering. As always, please check the trigger warnings for the series, as Dazai is basically a walking trigger warning wrapped in bandages. At the same time, his character serves as priceless mental health representation in an area that is often kept quiet. The way he buries his struggles behind a mask of lighthearted silliness is painfully relatable for many people. One of the many reasons I love this series.

Emotionally impactful story with excellent voice over
