Paolo and Gianna and their two young children, forced to leave their home country, arrive in Chicago's Little Sicily on a freezing night at the dawning of the Roaring Twenties. They quickly learn that they are not welcome or wanted in their new home and that the streets are not paved with gold. The streets and businesses are, in fact, run by dirty politicians, mobsters, and crooked cops. Times are tough; the young immigrants must learn to be tougher to survive.

When an act of brutal and terrible violence is committed against the family by their own countrymen, Paolo swears revenge. The boss of Little Sicily, Don Malo Tancredi, cannot tolerate disrespect and orders the public murder of Paolo as an example to the neighborhood he controls. Paolo then becomes the target of vicious assassins.

The young farmer-turned-slaughterhouse-laborer and his wife, Gianna, stand alone against the killers who wait outside their door to kill him.

With Paolo's death imminent, his survival, and the futures of their children, hang in the balance as the couple prays for a miracle and works to outsmart the mobsters who wait outside their door to gun him down.

This book was outstanding. I listened to it twice on Audible.
Steven Decker is extremely talented in his thorough explanation of the life of immigrant family who arrived in America from Sicily. I felt like i was there. Loved it!

Too muddled

Craftsmanship story telling in the first degree. I found the character development to be very on point with the struggles that Italian Americans most likely faced at this time in our history. I found the violence to be a little descriptive and rough. However, it was necessary to show the differences of these very different types of people and how love was more powerful than the gun. I hope another generation of this family can live on in books and be told as this story journey only the beginning. The continuing stories of the American dream in which drew this family across the Atlantic Ocean. I believe this story honors the real families who faced these prejudices of Italian immigrants like them, were stories lost in time until now. Well done.

A new American emerges.

This book is out of my comfort zone of romance books. This had a little bit of everything and kept me reading one more chapter. The book took me to a time of struggle, hardship, tears, loss and love of a strong family. I love it! I recommend this good read.

Enjoyed
