Pendergast--the world's most enigmatic FBI Special Agent--returns to New York City to investigate a murderous cult.

William Smithback, a New York Times reporter, and his wife Nora Kelly, a Museum of Natural History archaeologist, are brutally attacked in their apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Eyewitnesses claim, and the security camera confirms, that the assailant was their strange, sinister neighbor--a man who, by all reports, was already dead and buried weeks earlier. While Captain Laura Hayward leads the official investigation, Pendergast and Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta undertake their own private--and decidedly unorthodox--quest for the truth. Their serpentine journey takes them to an enclave of Manhattan they never imagined could exist: a secretive, reclusive cult of Obeah and vodou which no outsiders have ever survived.

While not up to the caliber of Cabinet of Curiousities or Brimstone this is a very entertaining book. The inclusion of NYC history added to the story.
The narrator does a very good job.

Entertaining

I have now complleted four of the Pendergast novels, I intend to start at the beginning with Relic and read those I passed over previously. I am hooked, Lincoln Childs and Douglas Preston have with little doubt created a legendary character and filled his world with unique and colorful imaginings. Thanks to Audible for making these books, with great readers available.

Brilliant

My husband and I have devoured all the Preston/Child Pendergast novels and were eagerly waiting for more.
So when we discovered this new novel had come out, but only in hardback, I jumped at the chance to hear it in audio.
I thought Rene Auberjonois did a terrific job of narrating and loved every minute of this novel.

Excellent Pendergast Story

Great story, as usual, but I miss Scott Brick narrating. He does a much better job separating character voices, inflicting panic and fear in his tone and cadence, and drawing me into the book.
