A modern retelling of the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley classic that addresses issues of belonging and assimilation

An unnamed paralegal, brought back to life through a controversial process, maneuvers through a near-future world that both needs and resents him. As the United States president spouts anti-reanimation rhetoric and giant pharmaceutical companies rake in profits, the man falls in love with lawyer Faustina Godínez. His world expands as he meets her network of family and friends, setting him on a course to discover his first-life history, which the reanimation process erased.

With elements of science fiction, horror, political satire, and romance, Chicano Frankenstein confronts our nation’s bigotries and the question of what it truly means to be human.

I really enjoyed this book. The intermingling of current events with this classic novel make for a great book. Those of us who grew up with the different iterations of Frankenstein in our childhood will enjoy this.
When I was done, it did give me reason to think — in a good way.
Great work.

I didn’t like the performance of this story. Probably would have liked it more if I had read it.

I like to alternate light reading after books with heavier topics. This one is thought provoking, but not particularly demanding. It as a fun and creative story. I looked forward to each chapter. I liked most of the characters.

Enjoyed this imaginative story

Parallels to current country’s prejudices and admin’s heartlessness were spot on. Loved the Spanish whenever it creeped in (helps that I comprehend/speak it). The dialogue was a little wooden/mechanical—was the author having the man speak that way to hint at him not having a personality and not much emotion? If so, it worked, but I found the lack of enthusiasm and emotion of the man a little sad. The narrator echoed the unemotional nature of the man. So if that was author’s intent then spot on. I think that’s the only thing I didn’t like about the book—the dialogue was sort of wooden or mechanical. But the story was wonderful and a great interpretation of the classic.

Story and ideas were great
