Adventure, unlikely heroes, found family.

Children of Iverbourne is a prequel novella taking place 236 years before The Eternal Machine, following the original heroes of the war-torn lands and the difficult choices they must make, all to ensure a better future.

A terrified slave, lacking bravery or free will, sent on an impossible journey.

A hardened commander of the Eternal prison, taking in his newest inmate.

An hours-old baby.

A half-crazed Fae, former hero of Borealis, Court of the Humans.

Two parents on a journey to deliver their child to Iverbourne, to freedom, no matter the cost.

A new captain, and a trouble-making Water Fae with a constant smirk.

First, I have to say that the narrator of this story did an amazing job. Her voice is beautiful and kept me interested in what was coming next. I will definitely be looking into her other works. The writing style is smooth with just enough description. I'm not usually one to delve into the fantasy genre, but this book was done well and perked my interest in the other books in this series.

Intriguing

Good introduction to world and politics of Iverbourne. Ms. Isaacs' descriptive style helps the listener begin to distinguish regional/factions in this prequel.
Narrator Paige Reisenfeld brings to life key characters with completely different accents and pitches, deftly illustrating and augmenting the author's introductions and scene-setting for the next book.

I have to admit that I was given this book and have no familiarity with the universe or characters. I think knowing more background would have lent more depth to the plot, but I still found this book engaging.
Each character (voiced by a talented narrator) has a brief but thorough introduction, so I did find myself caring about what happened to them. I enjoyed it enough to investigate the series.
as I said, I was given this book and am reviewing it voluntarily.

A solid prequel
