From John Wyndham, author of The Day of the Triffids, comes this chilling tale of a normal boy confronted with abnormal circumstances. Matthew had always been an ordinary boy. Even when he started talking to himself and introduced his invisible friend, Chocky, to the family, it was obviously just a phase he was going through. And all children have imaginary friends, even if Matthew’s a bit old to have one. As he becomes increasingly distressed and blames it on arguments with this unseen companion, his parents become concerned. But when Matthew starts explaining binary maths and anti-gravity propulsion, concerns turn to worry. After all, Chocky is only the product of an overactive imagination. Isn’t he? Chocky stars Sacha Dhawan as Matthew, Owen Teale as David Gore and Cathy Tyson as Mary Gore.©1953, 1968 John Wyndham; ©2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd; (P)2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd Radio European Entertainment & Performing Arts Entertainment Drama & Plays World Literature

Great cast, interesting story. I wish my father was as rational! Recommended listening if you like the works of Wyndham or Kneale.

I loved this book when I first read it long ago. This dramatization captures the story in great detail. The acting is so professional it seems effortless. And the gradual ramping up of tension is done very well. I recommend this.

Any additional comments?

I honestly don't think the production staff/actors behind this radio play could have done a better job of encapsulating the essence of the story and theme in Wyndham's work. You really get a sense of the confusion and trauma that this little boy is going through, along with the mystery of whether or not the voices in his head are real or imagined.
