While on a journey to the famous city of Thronehold, Volke Savan learns of the Sovereign Dragon Tournament. The massive celebration involves hundreds of arcanists competing for fame and glory, and Volke is determined to win.

Dark forces dwell in the city, however, and rumors of the legendary world serpent spread amongst the shadows. Whoever bonds with a god-like mystical creature will gain magic beyond compare, and the queen’s guards suspect cutthroats will use the chaos of the tournament to hide their plotting.

This latest volume in the series doesn't disappoint. We see our hero working through layers upon layers of plots and schemes. And while Luthere seems to take much more of a passive/back-seat role, we get more familiar with the emotions of major characters and what makes them tick. There's also some tugs on the heart strings. None of that, however, diminishes the the amount of battles and new powers being introduced. Definitely recommended. You will get much more out of the story if you are familiar volumes than if you start here, but I think it does enough help you catch on even if this is where you start.

Narration is on par with previous volumes and very well done. There is a good amount of energy and a nice range of voices for characters.

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
