In a city haunted by fear, some secrets refuse to stay buried—and it may be safer to forget them.

Mira Blayse is determined to uncover the truth behind her parents’ deaths in 1870. With an artist’s eye, she notices what others miss—but her investigations thus far have led nowhere. One morning at a café, she sketches a mysterious stranger, unaware that she is capturing the features of the man who will help her solve the case once and for all.

Byron Constantine is a brilliant detective, but his mind is fractured. He lives day-to-day, desperately fighting to hold onto his memories, only for them to slip away as he sleeps. Assuming the role of his secretary, Mira’s sharp eye for detail is the perfect complement to Byron’s deductive genius. More than an assistant, she bridges the gaps in his memory. Together, they tackle a case from Scotland Yard: the suspicious death of airship operator Clement Pennington.

With the Whitechapel murders dominating London, they uncover hidden schemes and shadows of a secret society that may hold answers about Mira’s own mystery. As the danger closes in, their partnership deepens—and Byron realizes there may be one memory he cannot afford to lose.

I’ve been wanting to read Natalie Brianne’s books for a while. I’m glad I got started with this one. It’s sometimes strange when an author reads their own fictional work. But once in a blue moon, it’s pulled off! Great work! Can’t wait to read more,

A wonderful story read by a wonderful narrator

This is a great book. I found myself wanting to listen to it more after starting it. The narration is pretty good (I hear that the author/narrator does other voice acting as well). It's a good read / listen, and I'm sad that the next book in the series isn't on audiobook yet, but I'll definitely be buying it when it does!

Fantastic Book!

Love love loved!! This was exactly what I was needing! It was so entertaining!
Going into it I had zero expectations which probably helped. The beginning felt a little slow but that’s most likely because I was listening to it at a slower speed to catch the world building details. Once hearts got involved, I was invested!

This story was masterfully done. Small hints here and there to imply the beginning of feelings between Byron and Mira. Single POV but that was perfect for the story seeing as Byron had memory loss so he would only have each day’s experiences to dwell on and the previous things he would read in his journal each day.

Such an interesting plot where the MC is a private investigator who has lost his memory and for four years, he wakes up thinking he’s still working on the case that possibly caused him the memory loss in the first place. He depends on his journal to give him a brief summary of what’s happened and his current case with Scotland Yard.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Super fun listen!!

Clean, zero spice romance. Mystery/suspense. Murder mentioned and some violence but not too much. Death of parents.

Big thanks to Natalie Brianne and Immortal Works for providing me with a copy of this audiobook!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Pennington Perplexity
(Audio Book 1 in the Constantine Capers series)

And now we have an audio book version! I really appreciated hearing the author narrate this first in the series audio book. The voice of each character is distinct and consistent throughout, making it easy to follow the storyline. It was interesting to compare what I “heard” in my head as I read the print book to the author’s vision of the characters. I’m happy to say the two were pretty well aligned.

As for the story, let me just reprise what I said in my original review of the print version: WOW! This book had my full attention from the first chapter. As grandmother to 13 girls I appreciate books with strong female protagonists. Even better are books where the action moves, the puzzles make you think and the author understands that a clean, interesting story line is hard to find but well worth looking for. This author has checked all the boxes.

… the characters are well developed, the location aptly described and the time period accurately portrayed. The author's unique hypothesis on what was behind the headline-making news of the day is very thought provoking.

Thank you Natalie Anderson for a wonderfully entertaining read [and now listen] in the form of "Constantine Capers"!

So excited to have an audio book version!

Mira enjoys her daily cafe time, drawing strangers. That is until one day a handsome stranger reaches past her and pulls out a piece of paper from the shrubbery. Intrigued, Mira reads the paper he shoved back in the hedge and decides to follow him. She had no idea that that one act would completely change her life or that the stranger would lead her on a grand adventure full of mystery, and answers to her deepest questions.

Fun Sherlock-Holmes-type romance mystery
