"A deeply spiritual, deeply moving book" about life on the Great Plains, by the New York Times best-selling author of The Cloister Walk (The New York Times Book Review).

"With humor and lyrical grace," Kathleen Norris meditates on a place in the American landscape that is at once desolate and sublime, harsh, and forgiving, steeped in history and myth (San Francisco Chronicle). A combination of reporting and reflection, Dakota reminds us that wherever we go, we chart our own spiritual geography.

I needed to hear this. I needed this friend to help me cope and give names to misty voices. Extra-interesting as I knew the Dakota of the 80s and see how much it has changed, yet remains the same. The Dakota gentleman farmer seems lost to history, however. Major loss in the mind and spirit of this place. I would have any friend who wonders what it's like for someone who moves here from any major metro area read this to understand life here...the rips and pulls and comforts and found beauty. A friend from here gave me the book to help me adjust, or simply commiserate intellectually. I gave to my mom to help her understand. Spot on. The woven Benedictine journey is moving and charming.

Truly cathartic
