The first lesson my father ever taught me was that power is the only currency, loyalty is the law, and always take what you want.

When the Mayor of our city begs me to keep his precious daughter safe, I seize my chance to strengthen the DeLuca hold on the town.

I’ll keep her safe, but it’ll come at a price.
Mia Gordon, the sheltered heiress, must become my wife.
She’s a stranger to our brutal world.
A symbol.
A means to an end.
A strategic move, nothing more.

But as I draw her into my shadowed life, shielding her from the ghost of our fathers’ past, I realize she’s more than a pawn. Every defiant glare, every whispered challenge stirs something dark and hungry within me. She’s an enigma, a mystery wrapped in innocence and hidden depths.

Protecting Mia becomes more than duty; it’s a burning need. The deeper we dive into the lies that bind her family to mine, she becomes more than just my wife in name. Mia’s the unexpected light in my dark world.

But can love be our salvation in a life built on blood and deceit, or will buried secrets destroy it all?

Nice story, not too graphic; mmc actually not too bad but the story wasnt too impressive. It was predictable and as soon as we have the plot twists, its quickly untangled and book ends 😅

Great narrators

The emotionless female narrator. Made this such a tedious listening journey!!! It almost drove me to drink!

I enjoyed the story but it’s hard to stay invested in the story as it’s overtly descriptive… (I.e…I’m acutely aware that I’ve crossed an undying precipice… “) it’s a lot of words, which takes away from the story.

Story is good but unnecessarily wordy and descriptive

I wish all of the DeLuca books were available on audible. This series is outstanding. This story had the perfect narrators.

I love this series

And Glaring Inconsistencies.

Tom Kain 😘 A new to me performer....he was so good I wouldn't have minded if he performed this title solo...his italian accent was chef's kiss! Eden Lafon was also good; she has a soothing, asmr quality type of voice. Her italian accent needs work; she sounded good, but it sounded nigerian or something close to that. I liked her, but I'm a bit more partial towards male performers 😍

Now for the inconsistencies: I kept wanting to know what happened to Mia's male friend from college - he and Mia had a reunion at a party and at some point they were re-inacting some antic they use to do that (naturally involved of course) him putting his hands on Mia. Dario of course sees this and is not happy so in a jealous rage (which I thought was in front of the other guests and reporters) crushed said college male friend's wrist. Dario carries Mia out and of course screws her into submission... What gets me is non of the guests seem to have seen this, nothing in the papers about this and Mia never explains who the college male friend is to Dario nor does she go to the hospital to check on him. It was like the college friend was written in to show us that Dario is possessive of Mia, then after that show, the college male friend disappears.

Now for the suspension of disbelief: First off, I love that Mia is a fluffy gal, but I couldn't comprehend how she is a size 18 woman in today's world and lives in the ever judging public eye and hasn't felt or experienced any insecurities for being obese? She could still have self-esteem but it would be difficult without some kind of help. And you can bet as strong as Dario is, he wouldn't have been able to lift Mia for a long time to have sex against the wall and I don't think Mia would have had the muscle strength to lift her legs and wrap them around Dario for long. I know this because I was a size 18 at one point and I still went to the gym.

Also, what mafia romance with a man as beautiful and powerful as Dario not have any OW drama?

And lastly, I guess it would be nice but...no racism at all? No issues with an Italian Mafioso with a plus-sized black woman? Yeah...this would be nice indeed.

4 starz - worthy of a repeat listen; I probably won't

Great Story With Suspense of Disbelief....
