A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Love is the best defense in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s explosive Mountain Mercenaries novel.

Gorgeous women don’t just stumble onto Ronan Cross’s remote property. But this one - vulnerable, victimized, and needing the kind of help only Ronan can offer - tells a story that makes his blood boil almost as hot as his need to protect her.

Since her father’s death, Chloe Harris has become a prisoner. Her own brother, a flesh peddler and low-level player in the Denver Mafia, is forcing her to sell her body for an endgame Chloe never saw coming: control over a vast fortune. Her only way out is to run - straight into the arms of the one hard-bodied man she can trust.

Defending Chloe could rain punishment down on the Mountain Mercenaries. Her brother has Mob connections and the local police in his pocket. But Ronan still has an edge - the unshakable loyalty of his deadly teammates. As well as an unquenchable thirst for retribution...and Chloe.

Ronan was minding his own business when Chloe was spotted walking on his property many miles from the nearest town. He knew something was up when he spotted the bruises on her skin. But he couldn't do anything at that time. After she was gone he couldn't get her out of his mind. When he and friends went to find out if she was being abused and doing things against her will. He and his fellow Mountain Mercenaries helped women and children to escape the men who would harm them. When he finds out that her brother was a member of a local mob they had to be careful not to start a turf war. Then came the chance to get her away from her brother all bets are off. Will the mob bosses allow this with no war? Or is there more to the plot her brother has in using and abusing women without the mob's approval? I enjoyed the narration, it kept me listening to the very end.

I enjoyed this story, much more because of the narrator who maintained if not completely accurate accents, at least consistent. Good inflections.

As for the author, I always have a bit of a hard time recommending Stoker's books because--as much as I enjoy them for snack-type books--they are hard to totally relax with since she has holes. She repeats things in the same book many times, and then says things from a previous book but incorrectly so you're all "NO! You said ____ not ___ and how you've retold it in this book changes the entire last book. ARG".

I think she just needs a good editor. For ALL of her stories.

That said, I really like the stories. I just have to remind myself to take them as good drama, good ideas, not the greatest execution, and when writing problems occur I simply pretend it didn't' happen--like one does for a bad episode of a favourite show. lol

Stoker is good for a light read.
