It was just another after-work happy-hour bar downtown, where business professionals unwound with a few drinks, complained about the boss, maybe hooked up with someone for the night. Until something went terribly wrong. At first it was just a friction in the air. The noise intensified. The crowd seemed oppressive. Some sharp words were exchanged, some pushing and shoving.

Then the madness descended. And after 12 minutes of chaos and violence, 80 people lay dead.

Eve Dallas is trying to sort out the inexplicable events. Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things - monsters and swarms of bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia. When forensics makes its report, the mass delusions make more sense: it appears the bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs that could drive people into temporary insanity - if not kill them outright.

But that doesn’t explain who would unleash such horror - or why. Eve’s husband, Roarke, happens to own the bar, yet he’s convinced the attack wasn’t directed at him. It’s bigger than that. And if Eve can’t figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere. Because it’s airborne....

This is one of my favorites of the In Death series. It may even be the very best. The first chapter grabbed me completely. Very intense and interesting. A huge incident at a bar leaving over 80 people dead. The diners begin to attack one another. The incident is beyond imagination, except for the imagination of Nora Roberts/JD Robb. The story: Someone or agroup have developed a chemical concoction that maddens people exposed to it. They are more than mad. They are murderous. Everyone is on high alert and very frightened that more people will die, and they do. Just when you think the book is over, it cranks up another notch.

Susan Ericksen performs the In Death books and she is fantastic. Her voices are consistent throughout the series. She brings the story to life. I love to listen to her.

In top three of all In Death books

This book is very different in that it combines my two favorite book subjects: Murder mystery and Medical mystery. As usual, all of the characters are very believable and it is very easy to get caught up in the Science Fiction aspects of the story, all of which are completely believable. Highly recommend, particularly if you have never read any of the "In Death" series since this makes a great stand-alone book.

This was my first detective/crime mystery. It had a very good plot with an unusual crime, interesting detective work, a strong heroine, romance, a twist at the end -- it had everything. I'm not sure why I can't give this a five all the way across, perhaps because I'm learning that crime mysteries are not my favorite genre. This is a very good listen, however, with an excellent reader.

Very Good Crime Mystery
