Welcome to the Choirboys!

Niko Devlin was a street kid. When his father was called to duty and his mother made an invalid by a plague, Niko learned to survive by his wits. He stole what he needed to stay alive and fought to keep what he stole. Until he got arrested.

On the eve of his majority birthday, Niko got laid off from his job and found out the son of the local crime lord had been selling his mom drugs and forcing her to “entertain” his friends.

Facing jail time - and almost certain death - for beating the crime lord’s son nearly to death, Niko is forced to join the military to get off world. The terms of his enlistment are such that he can’t quit, so he hopes to fly under the radar and serve his time in a do-nothing job. That’s his plan, anyway.

But plans have a way of getting disrupted, and when the Devil is calling the tune, sometimes all you can do is sing along.

Ordinarily I would not try a new author, but I found this one by searching for the narrator KC Johnston. I liked the title and length, so I gave it a try. Wow, I was happily surprised, and hope the author writes fast. It’ll be a great series to follow.

Great Read

The classic tale told with some new flourishes. Quite enjoyable. Worth the time it takes and that is what we all have in the shortest supply.
I really enjoyed some of the embellishments and I am looking forward to further adventures set in this universe with this fellow and his friends.

A good old fashioned "Street tough becomes a man"

Formulaic, ring like most prodigal son stories. An orphan ragamuffin, joining the military, earning the respect of his compatriots, in the end I’m coming the hero. Narration was four out of five stars. And I will give credit for moderate character development and quality attention to detail. In the beginning, I hate question and if it would be a quality story, but the climax in the ending definitely earned a couple of stars.

Slow to develop, but wants to beat gets rolling…

Even though set in future it parallels today’s military training and the interpersonal relationship that develops among military members

It truly follows the up and downs in military training
