A young man returns to West Texas to take over the family ranch he has inherited after eight years in the army. Almost immediately, Robert Bradford becomes a target of an assassination attempt. He suspects his older half brother, the owner of a much larger neighboring ranch, is behind the attempt. Robert also believes his half brother was behind the attempt to have him convicted of assault eight years earlier.

To save himself and the Parker Ranch, he hires a lawyer, Liz Roxbury, to fight his legal battles and Hawkins Security to help defend him against hidden enemies. Tensions mount as Robert begins to uncover the truth behind the earlier attempt to get him convicted of a crime he did not commit. It all plays out in the wild canyons of the Devil’s River with a surprise answer no one saw coming.

There’s a mystery in Limestone Creek, Texas… and it’s why this book was titled “Devil’s River.” Spoiler: only about one percent of the book takes place anywhere around the Devil’s River and the area and the river itself is inconsequential to the plot of the book.

The story itself is just okay- interesting enough not to turn it off, but not exactly riveting, either. Character development is lacking and while some of the dialogue sounds exactly how real people talk to their friends, other parts seem really forced. I’m not sorry I bought this and gave it a listen (on my road trip down near the Devil’s River), but I wouldn’t highly recommend it.

Oh, there’s a mystery here, all right…
