Amy Crider’s debut psychological thriller is an endlessly satisfying pause resister that will forever change the way you look at storytelling and mental illness.

Graduate student Wendy Zemansky was hoping for a normal semester at an isolated university in upstate New York. Since coming off disability and starting medication for bipolar disorder, Wendy longs to feel like a “real” functioning adult, a respected colleague in her writing program. But when her roommate goes missing, Wendy plunges into an investigation that is roadblocked by vainglorious professors, specious doctors, and dubious friends.

As time runs out, Wendy is forced to separate shades of suspicion amid a swirling and uncontrollable mania, leaving her with startling lessons on what it means to persevere when everyone is seemingly against you.

I enjoyed this listen and will say it’s a good one for slight intrigue without being put on edge too much, but overall I had hoped from the synopsis that it would be more suspenseful than it was… a bit slow and nothing felt particularly shocking or excited. Appreciated getting to learn a little more about mental illness and enjoyed examining the roles people played in the protagonists life in helping support her vs unintentionally or intentionally perpetuating the issues she was dealing with, but probably wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it to anyone. Made for an entertaining enough listen while on a 30 hour plane journey, though!

Not as twisty or interesting as hoped

A beautifully written, startlingly honest exploration of what it means to live with the vulnerability of a psychiatric disorder. Crider does not shy away from the raw truths of mental illness; instead, she lays them bare with a voice that is at once compassionate and unflinching.

A captivating portrait of mental health.

Loved the protagonist, as she struggles to make sense of the violent death of her friend.. She is blamed for her thoughts, and instead of being offered the support her College owes her, she is made to think she is spiralling into her disorder. The staff members responsible are diabolical, covering up their complicity in order for her to think it’s all her responsibility. Great characters. Had me until the very last word, More like this please!

Excellent fall into madness, very well narrated.,

Disorder is an apt title. The entire story is disjointed, the main character seems to bumble along and it all felt quite pointless.

Chaotic at best. I wish I would have just quit on it.
