A paranormal rollercoaster ride with goosebumps at every turn--now a motion picture starring Uma Thurman and Anna Sophia Robb!
Kit Gordy sees Blackwood Hall towering over black iron gates, and she can't help thinking, This place is evil. The imposing mansion sends a shiver of fear through her. But Kit settles into a routine, trying to ignore the rumors that the highly exclusive boarding school is haunted.

Then her classmates begin to show extraordinary and unknown talents. The strange dreams, the voices, the lost letters to family and friends, all become overshadowed by the magic around them.
When Kit and her friends realize that Blackwood isn't what it claims to be, it might be too late.

A favorite of mine from childhood. I didn’t really like the modernizations made, but other than that, it’s a great and suspenseful story. Lois Duncan wrote many books that I’ve re-read probably around 10 times each - what a talent she is.

Scary and enthralling

This is the kind of book I would have loved as a young reader. The ghosts, possession, wicked adults, and drama would have had me reading into the night. I recommend this book for kiddos 10 and up who like spooky reads.

I wasn't sure at first... it took a few chapters to really hook me, but after that it was great! Very suspenseful!

Gripping!

Prior to listening to Down a Dark Hall, my experience with Lois Duncan was from the movie version of I Know what you did Last Summer. I loved that movie, and had just as high expectations from all her stories, regardless of format. Unfortunately, this story failed to intrigue me.

The way it took place in an old mansion, the slow pace, and the not so scary hauntings reminded my of The Haunting of Hill House (Shirley Jackson). I hated that book, and this was only a slight improvement.

For anyone looking for a back to school themed book for spooky season, I would suggest looking elsewhere. The only positive thing I can say about this book is that the included poetry (secondary character Sandy is possessed by the spirit of a poet) is actually really good. I might check out one of Duncan’s poetry collections before completely giving up on her works.
