Vachss has reinvented detective fiction and, in the person of Burke, his haunted, hell-ridden P.I., has given listeners a new kind of hero.

Investigating an epidemic of apparent suicides among the teenagers of a wealthy suburb, Burke discovers a sinister connection between the anguish of the young and the activities of an elite sadomasochistic underground.

Critic reviews

"Burke's return is welcome - his superstud act may be extreme here, but he's one of the most fascinating male characters in crime fiction; and as usual, Vachss controls his narrative, cut up into bullet-sized chapters, with admirable precision." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Deliciously scummy....His bad guys are memorably heinous." (Washington Post Book World)

In this story we see a different side of Burke as he interacts with a young man. Interesting story.

Excellent narration.

Engrossing story, great narration and ultimately satisfying. Phil Gigante delivers this Vacchs story with the coldness and warmth of character making it very engaging.

Vacchs at his finest!

This is my sixth Vachss novel in two weeks and I have just started number seven. The lead characters are warriors with compassion, and they have added an edge to my professional approach as a psychotherapist. I’m adding to my education those lessons not coverered in grad school.

Here I am ending the 7th book "Down in the Zero" in the Burke series. I do love the gritty, Noir style writing of Andrew Vachss. This story takes Burke out of the rougher parts of NYC & has him in a upscale & ritzy town in Connecticut by the son of an old "acquaintance" who is scared due to a rash of teen suicides that aren't be reported in the paper. Burke's investigation starts off a lot slower than the rest of the series & wasn't till about about half-way thru before I started to figure out where the story was going (or I could just be a bit denser than I thought). I still plan on continuing with the series for at least a few more books. (

Another great Burke novel

I know there is a story in here between the sex scenes. They are not my thing but I speed through them most of the time. Not in this book. I have two hours left and I've sped through at least an hour.
I like the characters, the mystery, the narrator but the sex was too much.
