I've read this series so many times. It feels like I know the characters. I hope she continues to release stories in this universe.

My best friend introduced me to this series. It had been her favorite series for years. I had never read fantasy before so she gave me this book and had me read the second story as my introduction to the world of the Black Jewels in all its beauty, glory, darkness, pain, and allegorical perfection. Once you know about the fact that it’s a universe where things are opposite from our own it all seems perfectly reasonable but at the beginning it’s quite a lot of information to take in. Darkness is good, 13 jewel colors, women are the leaders, men serve, etc. etc. It’s a lot to learn!
But The Prince of Ebon Rih makes things seems simple. It’s a love story about a world where some humans fly, everyone has a magic stone, and there’s a wonderful young Queen who has an adopted brother who needs a wife. The universe that Anne Bishop has created is deep and beautiful and everlasting but in The Prince of Ebon Rih things become very simple. And if you’re wondering, yes! When I have a friend who wants to start the series I do the same thing for them that my best friend did for me. I give them a copy of Dreams Made Flesh and have them start by reading, (or listening to), the second story. Then after this simple sweet introduction they’re ready to start the first book in the trilogy The Daughter of the Blood just like I did. And also yes, by that time they are completely hooked just like me!

John Sharian does a great job narrating the series. At first it’s a bit unusual getting used to him when you’ve read it to yourself but then you begin to realize he hasn’t just reading the words he’s given the people an affect, a way of speaking, that is completely unique to this universe. After listening to the 9 books read by Sharian I can’t imagine hearing these characters speak in any other voice other than his. I even hear the cadence of his voice in my mind when I’m reading them to myself!

The best book to break into this series
