An old haunt in a once-derelict Brooklyn neighborhood harbors terrifying secrets in a wickedly chilling short story by Ivy Pochoda, the award-winning author of Ecstasy.

Erin tends bar at the last dive left in gentrified Red Hook, Brooklyn, where old-timers spin tales of the bar’s legacy and the waterfront’s crime-ridden past. Her boss, Jimmy, a real estate magnate responsible for much of the neighborhood’s shiny transformation, also has a story to share. Back when he was a struggling beat cop, two neglected boys introduced him to an ancient creature that made Jimmy’s dreams come true. Nightmares too. Erin doesn’t believe a word. The bar is her life. But this bar at the end of the world is also home to a deadly stowaway. And it’s looking for a new host.

This is a great short horror story, just in time for Halloween!👻
Creepy and original, with excellent narration, especially by the male Narrator. The cover art promises a wild ride from the start, but I thought I would like it anyway because I have listened to other works by this author and liked them very much. Give it a try…why not?!! 😍🤗👍🏼

Great Halloween Horror Story!!

Starts out strong. Loved the female narrator. She bumped the story up.

The twist was placed, and in my opinion wasn't clear as to how it originated. Perhaps I missed a clue early on.

Overall, a creepy good read.

What a creepy, unsettling, and wonderfully weird short story. Erin, a younger woman with big plans and even bigger issues, wants to purchase Lily’s—a gritty neighborhood bar now run by Jimmy, a longtime community-minded property owner who stepped in years ago to take responsibility for the bar and the apartment above it. He’s someone who genuinely cared about the people around him and the way the neighborhood evolved.

Erin has worked for Jimmy and at Lily’s for years, and you can feel the tangled history between them. She’s truly unhinged in the most captivating way, and honestly? She feels like someone who belongs to this dive bar and to Red Hook, Brooklyn. She doesn’t need to escape it—she deserves to grow old in the dim glow of Lily’s, surrounded by old-timer stories, half-truths, and barroom legends.

Creepy, atmospheric, and oddly intimate. This one sticks with you.

Well written horror story. I felt the reader on the audio tape did a good job.
The book just was not something I enjoyed. I guess I am too old for horror.

Well written, not my cup of tea
