In Farmer, Jim Harrison tells the story of Joseph, a 43-year-old farmer and school teacher who suddenly finds himself at a crossroads. Forced to choose between two lovers - one a younger woman, the other his beautiful childhood friend - he must also decide whether or not to stay on the farm or finally seek the wider, more broader horizons he has avoided all his life.

Returning Harrison fans will be ecstatic to find this early Harrison work available in audio, and for new listeners, this work serves as the perfect introduction to Harrison's remarkable insight, storytelling, and evocation of the natural world.

sure, harrison tells these growing old in the north stories a hundred ways, but this one is my favorite. Perhaps it's because I read it at 43, but maybe it's just the best one.

This story is an easy listen and harkens back to recent times on a farm. The setting is interesting without being action-packed - much like real life. I enjoyed the narrator’s reading.

Down home story

What a mediocre go nowhere book about nothing in particular that ends even worse. Actually it doesn’t even seem to end. It just stops.

Disappointing.

This is a very well read performance of a pretty good story. It is not an “action” story. It is about a middle age male dealing with what I suppose is a version of mid life crisis. It is set in Michigan in the 1950s. As an audiobook it is easily followed and I could listen to it while commuting.

The story sort of meanders. As a retired police officer the protagonist acts in a way that I consider dishonorable and hence I never actually like him. Obviously others may disagree. This is the kind of novel that I somewhat like, but do not need to read again without specific cause.

Thank You…

As An Audiobook Performance, Very Well Read, An Ok, Not Great Story

A waste of time. The narrator was extremely boring to listen to. The story line was non existent. Not worth the time.

Lame
