In early twentieth-century New York City, a young woman torn between two cultures must choose where her loyalties lie in a gripping short story by New York Times bestselling author Asha Lemmie.

Abandoned as an infant and raised by protective, if secretive, Italian parents, Carlotta has never quite fit in her own life as the only Black person in her neighborhood. Even when she ventures to Harlem, where jazz, community, and a man’s love await her, she doesn’t feel fully at home. But when the dynamics in her adoptive family shift, and her role grows more tenuous, Carlotta has to decide where she belongs—no matter the threats or the price that must be paid.

Asha Lemmie’s Fires to Come is part of Blaze, a collection of short stories about incendiary women across the decades who dare to defy convention. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

I loved this short story. Please please write it into a novel. So so good!

Can you imagine? An Italian mob family, taking in an orphaned black baby. Protecting her, and showing her as much love as they show their own children? Yeah, I can't either. But I love it regardless.

Now this was a different listen from the others but it definitely got to the action close to the end and it saved the story.

I loved how she was able to navigate her life in both worlds to save herself and come up with a better life.

A brave girl

Carlotta was adopted as a baby by Italian parents. She knows what the family business is, but the women in the family don't get involved. As her parents get older though her brother wants less to do with her. So she makes a decision that will affect her family forever. This book was probably my favorite one of the seven. I wish there was more to her story.
