A foreign county.

Five days to catch a killer.

While teaching a tracking class at a search-and-rescue conference in Iceland, Oregon State Trooper Gabriel Hawke discovers a body in a boiling mud pool. The body is the young man Hawke’s class is tracking.

Unable to walk away from the gruesome death without helping to find the killer, Hawke follows the clues and discovers the victim had few enemies, and all of them have alibis. The killer is cunning like the fox, but Hawke is determined to solve the homicide before the conference attendees head home in five days.

Oregon State Trooper Gabriel Hawke is in Iceland to teach a class at the Search And Rescue conference primarily directed to law enforcement personnel. His portion is on tracking and what he finds is the body of a kind, popular young man whose death affects everyone. And it is murder. Through an incredible amount of due diligence Hawke works with the local authorities to locate and provide evidence against the killer through a remarkable number of twists, red herrings, and deliberate misdirections. Riveting is a popular term for mysteries these days, but this one truly is.
Larry Gorman (narrator) gives a good performance in the sense that I felt that he WAS Trooper Hawke! And mastering the pronunciations of the Icelandic person and place names was award worthy! I am somewhat familiar with the problem and even bought a sight copy so I could verify the difficulty as well as simply see it for myself.
