Writer Barry Hannah and journalist Andrew Meldrum on this archive edition of Fresh Air. A native of Mississippi, Barry Hannah has been writing short stories and novels set in the South for over thirty years. Truman Capote once called him "the maddest writer in the U.S.A." His first book, the autobiographical novel Geronimo Rex won the William Faulkner Prize for writing. He followed that with Airships, a collection of short stories now considered a classic. He continued to publish more short story collections and novels, though his 2001 novel Yonder Stands Your Orphan was his first in ten years. Journalist Andrew Meldrum is the Guardian's Zimbabwe correspondent. He covered the presidential election in Zimbabwe and was jailed for 33 days for violating the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, which punishes journalists for publishing "falsehoods." The law was one of several instituted by President Mugabe in a crackdown on the media. Original broadcast dates: July 31, 2001, May 23, 2002)Want more Fresh Air?
