She can't escape her past . . .

Derbyshire, December 1861. Haunted by the events of the summer, Samantha Kingston has found her retreat to the country less restful than she hoped. When a house party reintroduces V. T. Wyatt into her life after a three-month absence, she has mixed feelings. It doesn't help that they must keep their distance to stop the gossip mill running. But when Samantha stumbles across the body of someone she recognizes and in whose death she fears she may have played a part, keeping their distance becomes impossible. Working together once again, Samantha and Wyatt must solve a murder that grows more complicated with every clue they uncover. But how does one find a killer who seems to have vanished without a trace?

This was a really good second book. The story flowed well, with new and interesting side characters. Samantha and Wyatt must contend with stolen gold, possible treason, murder, a woman's right to lead her own life, and trust issues. This one grabs you right from the beginning and holds your attention. Once again the narrator does a fantastic job. I'm ready for the next book.

A caveat to this review is that the best way to enjoy this and the others in this series is to begin with the first. This permits understanding of the characters and their development properly. All of whom are understandingly human and interesting. Also, the author has done some good research into the history of the times. Only drawback is the narration which was mostly good, but a little over dramatic at times.

I really like these books by Emily Finch.

Such a well written series of books. I am only hoping that the author will continue to write Samantha and Wyatt additional books.
