Kat doesn't want any trouble...but the body count's rising faster than the Mississippi.

No one in Twin Oaks knows about the risky deal Kaitlin Wells cut with the Feds for her release. But everyone remembers her scandalous arrest for stealing money from the Mercury Bank. Now, three years later, Kat has come home to catch the real thieves and prove her innocence. Trouble is, some powerful folks don't want her digging up the past...or getting friendly with new sheriff Justin Radner. But some laws can't be ignored, like white-hot attraction. And soon, determined Kat and her handsome, daring lawman are risking love and life to expose the lies that will bring down a murderer...before the killer strikes again.

This one actually has plot, suspense, intrigue, unexpected twists -- all the things a mystery/thriller should have. And it's also a bodice ripper :-) So, if you like romance and mystery, I definitely recommend it.

Not just a bodice ripper!!

This was a wonderful and gripping novel; I purchased this book not having read any of Meryl Sawyers books before and was very disappointed in not having any more books to listen to on audible. Finding a new author to enjoy, as many of you know is not something that the avid reader takes lightly. I really enjoyed how suspenseful, thrilling, passionate, and wonderfully romantic this was. The narrator did an excellent job bringing this story to life and I would love to hear more from her.

I loved it!!!

This book was pretty good. Not great, but entertaining. My only complaint is regardng the love scenes. I didn't like how the author kept calling the leading man's "guy part" by it's anatomically correct name, a p---s. It was kind of silly and awkward. Not really sexy at all. I kept flinching. Otherwise a nice story, good narrator.

awkward love scenes

What did you love best about Half Past Dead?

Nice flow to this mystery. Good character development, see Sandra Brown's Slow Heat in Heaven or Where's There's Smoke if you liked this story. They are classics

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the characters evolved into the plot. The dogs gabbed your heart.
This author is a true lady and chose not to use co_k , instead used the correct anatomical name for that body part. It may have set too tame a mood for another reviewer, but this was more a mystery than a bodice ripper. Reader did bring lots of the characters to life, unfortunately she did not have much of a male voice and our hero really required it to bring out the masculinity the author described.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cecelia Fortero?

Angela Dawe, Karen White, or Jonathan Davis any of which could have made this classic writers' work as good as the author intended. This was written in 2006 and this reader had almost no deeper male voice inflection in their scenes. Her female voices/characters were good, but the key players were men, hence the poor rating. She sounds so much like Cassandra Campbell or Caroline Winbourne/aka Coleen Marlo both of which I do not buy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes as I am a long time fan of the author who I had the privilege to meet at an authors signing. Get her Tempting Fate, an all time fave of mine.

Any additional comments?

As always, a poor reader can kill an author's good book. Look what Dreamscape did on classic Linda Howards reads.

I kept hoping I would get to end of this. While it had a good premise, I found the characters boring, but you have to finish something you've paid for unless it's horrible. So it didn't quite reach that, but I was so tempted to quit. The narration was not much help. It was also boring, and the worst thing was, the hero sounded just like the heroine. If they were talking to each other, I lost track of who was saying what. She needs to work on her male voices.

Mediocre in everyway
