The fate of a lonely girl becomes part of a town’s shameful secret history in Thriller Award winner Jennifer McMahon’s terrifying story of guilt, retribution, and one tragic Halloween night.

Thirty-four years ago, on October 31, poor Hannah Talbott took part in a scavenger hunt gone violently wrong. The mean girls made sure of it. To this day, for a haunted local mother, the most unsettling Halloween costume of all is an urban legend they call Hannah-Beast. It’s a reminder of the past she can’t forget. Especially tonight when it’s come back, so close to home.

Jennifer McMahon’s Hannah-Beast is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

SPOILER ALERT: Anyone with a teenage child knows what the end is going to be. Understandably the mom is so deep into her own pain that she misses out on obvious signals.

The book was well written making recognize the mean girls and how awful middle school can be. The narrator did an excellent job.

Mean girls grow up.

Told in two timelines, in 1982 and 2016 on Halloween night. This is a dark and disturbing "mean girl" trope. Couldn't listen faster than 1.25x speed because the narrator sounds very "robotic" at a faster speed.

This story was very intense and very scary. I was really enjoying it until the ending. I don't like the way it was left. I definitely recommend people be cautious when reading this story and any other in this series. Some can be very triggering if not careful. I do recommend the book still. Even though I wasn't pleased at all with the ending. I repeat though, be mindful of possible triggers.

I felt the story was excellent and the narration good overall. This is an excellent narrator. I have enjoyed her other work. What I dislike in the narration, others might see as a good thing. I felt the voices of the whining girls was really annoying, too much of their grating voices. It took away from enjoying the story. The girls could sheik and be annoying, but without being so irritating. Maybe too much realism. The story is great and the climax isn't predictable. If you can handle listening to taunting and screechy teen girl voices, the tale is great. Delivers the goods and made it worth the minor bumps.

I wanted more. I wanted to know what happened to the other two girls as well.
